I think overall this year in ceramics has been sucessful, but I wish I could have made a few more projects. My main problem throughout the semester has been having my projects rip at the base. I also wish I could have done a raku glaze. As you may know, I am also horrible with technolgy and struggled with the website. Other than that I loved being in ceramics and I will always remember the class.
 This is a medium sized pitcher. The dimensions are 6 1/2" by 3". The pitcher holds a little over 16 ounces of water and isn't too heavy (a concern with any ceramic vase). The outside is glazed tomato red and the inside is glazed cobalt blue. By glazing the inside of the blue it adds a depth to the pitcher and makes it seem a bit larger than it actually is.
 This is a flared cylinder with a transformed lip. The dimensions of the project are 4" by 4". The body and inside of the project is glazed burnt orange and has been dipped in dark blue, creating a color block look. The dark blue also makes the cylinder seem a little less flared because the blue is so much darker than the orange.
 This is a salsa tray or a planter without the holes. The dimensions of the base are 10 1/2" by 1" and the bowl is 3 34" by 2". The base of the tray is glazed dark blue making it seem slightly smaller, compared to the bowl up top. The outside of the bowl is glazed burnt orange and the inside is shadow green. Similar to the other bowl I made the shadow green drips over the edges creating the illusion of the bowl overflowing. Next time i might try a simpler glaze and try. I hope to get some use out of this project at family get together s..
 This is a large bowl that I made. The dimensions are 7 1/4" by 4". The outside of the bowl is glazed burnt orange and the inside is glazed shadow green and drips onto the outside of the bowl. The drips along the outside make it look as if the bowl is overflowing and the shadow green has a shiny finish compared to the orange, creating a bit more contrast than just coloring.
 This is a choice project. During my three semesters of advanced ceramics I have made several projects similar to this. I would consider this to be a sphere like shape. It is 5" tall and 4" at its wides part. The opening at the top is 1". The top half is glazed in burnt orange, which overlaps mat yellow on the bottom. The small opening on the top creates negative space and the light and dark colors, along with the different finishes provide contrast to the peice as well.
 This is a plate ceated for my wide project. It has a diameter of 8" and a height of 1". This plate has a fairly tall lip, making it more like a mix between a dish and plate. One half of the plate is glazed burnt orange and the other half is glazed blue. Overlaping these two colors is mat yellow, which covers about 1/5 of the plate. The yellow created a green color over the blue. The uneven proportions and the color wheel aspect creates a focal point where all four colors meet, taking the eye away from the actual center. The only change I would make to this plate would be to make the blue line more crisp.
 This is the second bowl for the soup kitchen project. The dimensions of the bowl
are 3” by 5”. The bowl is a little bit too thick at the base. This could have been solved by removing more clay at the base while footing. It also has a chip on the lip. This occurred while I was taking it home. The outside of the bowl is glazed in turquoise matt and the inside is glazed with black satin. I also took the black and layered it on top of the turquoise on the outside. After it was glazed the black ran slightly, creating an uneven wavy edge to the two different glazes. The color also fades from the normal black satin to a emerald green and finally a dark streaky black. The contrast in shine and dull and the way the black run on the outside makes it look as if the bowl were overflowing.  This is my taller than it is wide project and it is a cylinder. The dimensions
are 6” by 3 ½”. While I was footing this project I took several tools are carved groves into the sides, giving the cylinder texture and design. The groves range from 1 cm to 1/3 cm. In order to exaggerate the groves more I glazed the body of the project black and glazed the inside of the groves with clear. The glazing and the groves help camouflage the fact that this project is not a perfect cylinder and has a slight flare at the bottom  This is the first bowl of two for the North Bend’s food bank soup fundraiser.
The dimensions of the bowl are 3” by 5 ¾ “. The bowl doesn’t have any special detailing and is glazed dark blue. The glaze did, however, crawl in a few places on the outside of the bowl. The dark blue gives the perception of the bowl being deeper than it actually is. It also makes the shape of the bowl more defined. |
